7 Important Things to Know Before Installing a Retaining Wall in BC

Here are 7 important things to know before installing a retaining wall in BC.

We recently completed a custom Allan Block retaining wall installation in West Kelowna, building approximately 130 linear feet of structural retaining wall for a residential property. The goal of this project was to stabilize sloped terrain, improve usable yard space, and create a clean, long-lasting landscape structure designed for Okanagan soil and weather conditions.

Scope of Work

This project involved the removal and preparation of the existing grade to properly accommodate a new retaining wall system. We carefully excavated and prepared the base to ensure proper compaction and long-term stability before installing the foundation layer.

Once the base was established, we installed the Allan Block system in precise, level courses, ensuring each row was properly aligned and locked in for structural integrity. Proper drainage was a key focus throughout the build to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup behind the wall over time.

We also worked around the existing landscape conditions and elevation changes on the property, adjusting installation techniques to ensure the wall followed the natural slope while maintaining a clean and uniform finish.

Drainage & Structural Integrity

Proper drainage is one of the most important parts of any retaining wall system in the Okanagan. For this project, we incorporated drainage stone and backfill materials behind the wall to allow water to move freely and reduce pressure buildup.

This ensures the wall remains stable through seasonal freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rainfall, and long-term soil movement common in BC hillside properties.

Materials & Build Quality

  • Allan Block engineered retaining wall system
  • Compacted granular base material for foundation stability
  • Drain rock and proper backfill for drainage
  • Precision leveling and course alignment for clean finish

Result

The finished retaining wall provides strong structural support for the property while significantly improving usable yard space. The clean, uniform design enhances the overall landscape while ensuring long-term durability and performance in West Kelowna’s climate conditions.

This installation now protects against further soil movement and creates a functional, visually appealing outdoor space that adds value to the property.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Allan Block retaining wall?

Allan Block is an engineered retaining wall system designed for strength, drainage, and long-term durability. It is commonly used in residential and commercial landscaping to hold back soil and stabilize slopes.

How long does a retaining wall like this last?

When properly installed with correct drainage and base preparation, an Allan Block retaining wall can last decades. The key factors are proper compaction, drainage, and structural installation.

Do you handle excavation for retaining walls?

We typically work alongside excavation crews or assist in site preparation as part of the installation process. This ensures the wall base and grading are properly prepared before construction begins.

Why is drainage so important in retaining walls?

Without proper drainage, water builds up behind the wall and creates pressure that can lead to shifting or failure. Drainage systems prevent this by allowing water to move through the backfill safely.

What areas do you service?

We provide retaining wall construction throughout West Kelowna, Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, and surrounding Okanagan communities.
