A lot of Kelowna is built on a slope. In neighbourhoods like the Upper Mission, Kettle Valley, Black Mountain, Dilworth and Glenmore, plenty of backyards only become usable once a wall is holding the hill back. That is the work we focus on.

We come from a concrete forming and foundation background, so we can build your wall in segmental block like Allan Block, in poured concrete that we form ourselves, or in timber. Whatever the material, the part you don’t see is what makes it last: a compacted base, drain rock, filter fabric and a perforated drain pipe behind the wall to keep water pressure off it through our freeze-thaw winters.

Kelowna’s height rules for retaining walls

Under the City of Kelowna’s zoning rules, a single retaining wall is limited to 1.2 m (about 4 ft) of exposed height. If you need to hold back more than that, the usual answer is two tiers: up to 2.4 m in total, with at least 1.2 m of level ground between the walls. A fence on top of a wall can bring the combined height to 2.0 m at most. Anything taller needs a Development Variance Permit from City Council plus a soil permit with an engineer’s sealed drawings.

Most retaining walls in Kelowna cost between $50 and $110 per square foot of wall face, installed. A short garden wall on a flat, accessible yard sits near the low end. A tall structural wall on a steep lot with poor access and full drainage sits near the top.

What changes the price:

  • Wall height — in Kelowna, a wall over 1.2 m (about 4 ft) needs City approval and an engineer’s design, which adds cost and time
  • Site access — a wall a machine can reach costs far less than one we wheelbarrow to
  • Excavation and spoil — how much dirt comes out and how far it has to go
  • Drainage — drain rock, fabric, and perforated pipe behind the wall
  • Materials — Allan Block, timber, or natural stone
  • Slope of the property and what the wall is holding back

Example: a 40 ft long, 3 ft high Allan Block wall with good machine access typically runs $5000 to $11 000 including base prep and drainage.

Every lot is different, so we walk the site before putting a number in writing. But if your budget isn’t close to the range above, we’d rather you know now than after three meetings.
